Set into thehillside of history

Birrificio Montecassino sits in the hills beneath the Abbey of Montecassino — one of Europe's most significant cultural landmarks, founded by Saint Benedict in 529 AD.

Monks brewed here for centuries — some sources suggest it was Europe's oldest abbey beer.

Stretching over 700 acres, the Albaneta Estate offers rock-filtered mountain spring water, estate-grown barley, an authentic Italian restaurant on site, and a brewery whose methods remain rooted in tradition.

Our Story
Cassino, Lazio

A thousand years inthe making

Birra Montecassino's story is bound to the Abbey of Montecassino, established by Saint Benedict in 529 AD on the mountain above Cassino.

The abbey became a beacon of culture and learning across Europe. Historical accounts suggest that as early as the 6th century its monks cultivated barley and brewed beer — some sources cite it as Europe's earliest known abbey beer.

"Some things are worth doing exactly as they were done fifteen centuries ago."

A history of brewing
  • 529 AD Saint Benedict establishes the Abbey of Montecassino on the mountainside above Cassino, Lazio.
  • 6th century Monks cultivate barley on the estate and brew — some sources cite this as Europe's first recorded abbey beer.
  • Today Birrificio Montecassino brews on the Albaneta Estate beneath the abbey, with rock-filtered mountain water and natural carbonation.

Brewed with rock-filtered spring water drawn from within the Montecassino hillside — the same mountain that has sustained the abbey for fifteen centuries.

The estate stretches over 700 acres of Italian mountainside, home to an authentic restaurant and a brewery whose soul remains rooted in the traditions of those who came before.

The entire estate project was conceived and built by its owner, Miri Daniele.

The Battle ofMontecassino

High above the Liri Valley, the Benedictine abbey of Montecassino looked down on one of the Second World War's most ferocious campaigns. For five months in 1944, Allied and German forces fought for the Gustav Line — a fortified barrier across the Italian peninsula.

Four battles were fought on these hills. Soldiers from more than thirty nations fought on the slopes below the abbey.

The four battles
I
January 1944
US forces assault the Rapido River and Monte Cassino. Heavy losses, no breakthrough.
II
February 1944
New Zealand and Indian troops attack. The abbey is controversially bombed to rubble.
III
March 1944
Operation Dickens. Massive air and artillery bombardment; the town is destroyed.
IV
May 1944
Operation Diadem. Polish II Corps takes Monastery Hill. The Gustav Line breaks.

The Gustav Line was the strongest German defensive position in Italy. Running coast to coast, it exploited every ridge, river and ravine — and nowhere more so than at Monte Cassino, where the mountains had been turned into a near-impregnable fortress.

The abbey itself — founded by Saint Benedict in 529 AD and one of the oldest monasteries in the Western world — stood over the only viable route north to Rome. Whether German troops occupied it became one of the war's bitterest controversies. On 15 February 1944 Allied bombers reduced it to rubble, which German forces then used to build even stronger positions.

It was the Polish II Corps — soldiers who had come by way of Soviet camps, Persia, the Middle East and North Africa — who raised their flag over the ruins on 18 May 1944, after four days of fighting on Monastery Hill that cost them thousands of casualties.

The fall of Monte Cassino broke the Gustav Line and opened the road to Rome, which Allied forces entered on 4 June 1944 — two days before D-Day. Today the rebuilt abbey stands again in white stone above the valley, and the war cemeteries below it bear quiet witness to those who fell in its shadow.

Rebuilt stone by stone

Brewed beneath an abbey that history could not erase

Montecassino was destroyed in 1944 and rebuilt, stone by stone, by 1964. Our beers are brewed on the estate on the hillside beneath it — a place that chose to endure. Every bottle carries that name with respect.
