Pick up a famous Italian beer in a UK supermarket, turn the bottle around, and read the small print. There is a fair chance it was brewed rather closer to home than the label's imagery suggests.

Many well-known Italian beer brands sold in Britain are brewed under licence in the UK. It is a common and entirely legal arrangement: a British brewer produces the beer to the brand's recipe, in Britain, for the British market. It keeps prices down, simplifies logistics, and for large lager brands it is often the norm rather than the exception. The bottle may speak of Italian sunshine; the brewing water may come from rather greyer skies.
None of this is a scandal — but it is worth knowing, because for many drinkers, where a beer is made is part of what they are buying. Water, climate, ingredients and place all leave their mark, and "Italian beer" that has never seen Italy is, at the very least, not quite what it appears.
Read the Label
How to tell where your beer is brewed
- Find the brewer's address. The back label must state who brewed the beer and where. A UK address means UK-brewed, whatever the front of the bottle evokes.
- Look for "brewed under licence" or "brewed in the UK". The phrasing is often small and easy to miss — it tends not to be shouted about.
- Look for "Product of Italy" or "Prodotto in Italia". Beer genuinely made in Italy usually says so plainly, with an Italian brewery address to match.
- Check the importer line. Genuinely imported beer typically names a UK importer or distributor alongside the Italian producer — a sign the beer itself travelled.
Why It Matters
Does provenance change the beer?
Brewed-under-licence beer is made to a specification, and made competently. But brewing is agriculture as much as industry: the mineral character of the water, the barley in the fields, the yeast at work — these are of a place. That is precisely why regions develop beer traditions at all, and why the same recipe brewed in two countries is never quite the same beer. If provenance did not matter, no one would print the mountains on the label.
